Black Murray
One of the nastiest rapid on the course, Black Murray was named after Steve Black and John Murray who amongst the first enthusiastic trippers of this section of water. It varies hugely according to water level. In low water, it is difficult to find the lateral channel that offers the only real line. In medium conditions, it is straighter and faster, and in full conditions, it whips up a huge wave at the bottom that can be merciless!

The rapid is clearly marked , and if you are in any doubt, use the portage option on the right hand bank. If you want to shoot it, approach the rapid on river right. If it is low keep looking on the right until you see the narrow slot running diagonally left. All other lines are very tight. Hopefully there will be a safety marshall or spectator keen to assist by showing you a good line.

Once into the heart of the rapid, the water flows fast towards a big rock cluster on the left bank. Go with the water, albeit slowly, and let the water push your nose away from the rocks on the left. After that there is one final drop that is best approached as far left as possible in low water, or in a full river, it is easy to skirt right.
