Also known as the "Mineshaft" for the sensation of rushing downwards, this weir is just 1 km after Scotson's bridge in Underberg. It is a massive weir that can ONLY be shot down the Fish Chute on the left face of the weir. Anywhere else would be catastrophic! The entrance to the weir will be clearly marked for the race, and is recommended for everyone!
The the line into the Chute will be marked by poles or slalom gates on either side of the chute. There is also a large white mark painted on a rock below the weir, which gives you a marker to aim for. The weir chute is a 30 degree slope down towards the river, with a small concrete lip on either side of it. It should be taken slowly, and carefully, and is generally a safe and easy-to-manage thrill for all paddlers.
In full river conditions the chute tends to throw up a nasty stopper wave, and in these cases it is made a compulsory portage. The weir can be portaged easily on either bank
