Please be advised that the Glenhaven rapid on the Umzimkulu River outside of Underberg has been altered to prevent any further flood damage to the east bank and in the long term the Glenhaven road. It is also hoped that the rapid will now be considerably safer for all river uses and their boats.
A new channel has been dug starting at the top centre of the rapid and ending along the left hand bank at the base of the rapid. The rocks taken from the channel have been used to fill in the old river line along the right hand bank. The pool above the rapid has dropped about 1 metre in depth. This has also opened up two rapids on the bend about 300m upstream that have been underwater for the last 15 years!

The new channel has been dug to the depth of the river as it was before the dam burst which formed the rapid in the early 1990’s. Currently it is free of any rocks or holes and it is hoped that it will stay that way for years to come. However, please be advised that some settling of the rocks on the sides of the channel may occur once the river fills with the summer rains.
Please exercise caution when paddling this section of the river. The portage is still open on the right hand bank should you not wish to paddle the rapid.
Please find some pictures attached to give you a better idea of the changes made.
Should you wish to come and see the changes to the rapid before paddling the river please would give me a call first, rather than just pitching up. Glenhaven remains private property and access is by prior arrangement only. The office number is 033 7011531 and my mobile number is 0825780660.
