A wonderful rapid in the Lower Gorge, about 4 kilometres from the finish, that is always a thrill to shoot. It's called Heaven and Hell, because there was initially felt to be one safe sneak (Heaven) and one tricky big drop (Hell). But nowadays it has been divided into three options.
"Heaven" is the sneak on the left hand bank, under the trees, that skirts all the action in a gentle chicken run. "Purgatory" is the steeper chicken run that runs down the centre, just to the left of the main drop. "Hell" refers to the main drop on the right, which is, despite it's name, is the first choice option.
The drop itself is actually a large rock shelf, four foot high on the extreme right. It is best approach on the left hand side of the drop, where it is less steep. Approach it at 45 degrees left to right, and drop down the sloping rockface into the main pool. It is a thrilling drop, and a safe pool from which to swim in case of accidents!
