Heaven and Hell

A legendary rapid! This is a low level look at Heaven and Hell rapid to give you a good idea of where the rocks are and where the main water flow goes. During the race there is generally someone to show you the right line. This is the best line - forget the "Heaven" sneak under the trees on the left, and the "Purgatory" line is slowly closing up. From the calm pool above the rapid, identify the rocky island on the left of the shelf drop on the right. Go straight for this island, and as you approach the left hand side of the drop, turn 45 degrees to the right to drop into the nice deep pool

Pro Tip

This is a bouncy drop when it is full, and most swimmers fall to the right because they brace on the turbulent water on their right. Brace going into the drop, but once you take the drop, get your paddles up and prepare for a few bold strokes away from the rapid.
